Unit 1: Definitions

Key Words and Definitions:

1. Prehistory began with the appearance of the first human beings 2 million years ago) and ended with the appearance of writing (3500 BC).

2. Paleolithic, which means “old stone”, began with the appearance of tools made of stone, bone and wood (Homo habilis). It is the longest period in Prehistory, covering 99,5% of the history of the human race.

3. Hominisation refers to the series of changes that occurred in some ancient primates and led to the appearance of modern humans. This process took millions of years and eventually all the species of hominids became extinct apart from one, Homo sapiens.

4. Art is a creative expression, principally painting, drawing and sculpture.
